About Us

James Ballentine VFW Post 246 is a registered 501c19 non-profit orginization. All of our proceeds go to to Veterans in need, and the community of Minneapolis. The next time you come in to celibrate, or just have a meal, you will know that your money is going to help someone!

We have cold beer available on tap and in bottles, plus wine, mixed drinks, soft drinks, cocktails, and hot coffee. Ask about our drink specials, including cheap pitchers with free popcorn.

FOOD

Hungry? We've got juicy burgers, fresh salads, and our Saturday and Sunday breakfast is available from 8 am until 3 pm. Try our Green Bloody Mary or Screwdriver with steak and eggs for $12.99. James Ballentine

VFW Post 246 was named in honor of James J Ballentine. Ballentine was born July 25, 1893 in Rochester, Minnesota (Olmsted County) USA
Born to Stuart Ballentine (b. Newfoundland) and Helen Rynal (b. Rochester, Minnesota) he grew up to attend Greely Grade School. He entered South High School in September of 1908 and graduated in 1912 as President of his Senior Class. From his early youth he showed a marked ability in all athletics particularly sprinting and was unanimously elected Captain of South High track team in 1911 and 1912. In May, 1912, in Chicago, IL he won the U.S quarter mile championship from a field of 67 starters in 52 and 1/2 seconds.
Following his high school career, he attended Hamline University in 1912. The next year he transferred to the University of Minnesota 1913, where he spent two years in academics and the following two years studying law. He had always been an athlete and this continued into college. He was a track star while at the University of Minnesota and a half back for the football team in 1916.
Ballentine then attended first Officers Training School at Fort Snelling, MN getting his Commission early in August. He also graduated while at Fort Snelling.
He was offered to France unattached and soon went to the Front as lieutenant in Machine Gun Co. 3rd Infantry. Ballentine was then KIA October 10, 1918.
Join us annually, the SATURDAY morning before Memorial Day for a graveside Memorial Service in honor of James Ballentine.  Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN to pay respect to our fallen brother.
